      California Budget causes Faculty Furloughs at CSUSB

       Because of severe state budget cuts to the California State University equal to one-quarter of our previous state appropriations, faculty are contractually forbidden to provide instruction on six workdays this term. The daily schedule below reflects days when classes will not meet and also additional days when the instructor is not permitted to engage in such activities as meeting with students, advising, grading tests, responding to student work, writing letters of recommendation, and answering course-related e-mail. Faculty have also been asked to assign students additional course work to make up for omitted class meetings and otherwise to assure that students fully earn any credit hours they receive for this course.

      Quote: "The recent Memorandum of Understanding between the CSU and the CFA created the need to formulate a furlough plan for faculty. Under the MOU, faculty will take 18 days of furlough during the next academic year. Provost Bodman has worked with the Faculty Senate and the College Deans to craft a CSU plan, within the limitations imposed by the MOU. [...]"

      During the coming academic year, there will be six (6) State Budget Reduction Closure days when the whole campus will close down. Some of these will lead to class meetings being cancelled.

      1. Fall 2009: Oct 22, Nov 30
      2. Winter 2010: Feb 12, Mar 2
      3. Spring 2010: Apr 27, May 28

      I have chosen a further 12 days of Furlough when I won't be working for CSUSB. I have scheduled these days to try to avoid all my class meetings. Here is the list of dates for the year:
      1. Fall 2009: Sep 18, Sep 25, Oct 9, Nov 20.
      2. Winter 2010: Jan 11, Jan 15, Feb 19, Feb 22
      3. Spring 2010: Apr 9, May 7, Jun 4, Jun 11
