As a followup to our previous posting (RE: CASE Survey), here is a textual
version of most of what went into the Hypercard stack for the 1990 CASE
Survey that we mentioned.
The summaries reflect the views of vendors, and comments the views of textbooks
and articles cited in the Hypercard stack.

Please feel free to add, correct or comment (PLEASE mail kiruki@cs.anu.edu.au).
The information collected will be integrated and the new list made available by
anon ftp or posting to this group.

Comments:
Excellent introduction to object-oriented programming reasonably priced for
high-level applications generation under Windows. However unsuitable for low-
level programming; slower than compiled C programs; on the other hand C
modules can be called through the foreign language interface.
Summary:
Object-oriented language environment with good access to Windows. The Actor
language is an alternative to but similar in syntax to C or Pascal and could be a
good way of developing small- to medium-sized Windows-based applications with
greater ease than C++.
Unlike C++ or the various object-oriented Pascal extensions that are third
generation languages mocked-up with object-oriented features, Actor is
designed starting from object-oriented concepts.
Actor is between being a compiled and an interpreted language. It compiles
small source code entities into image files that can be dynamically loaded. This
makes Actors a good prototyping language allowing to change a running system
by switching easily between execution in one window, runtime data inspection
in another and source code browsing and editing in yet another window.
Actor has a foreign language interface. It can also call programs written in
languages such as C and Pascal and can access modules of any MS Windows
compatible language through dynamic link libraries.
The environment includes a Windows prototyper, class browser, inspector (data
structures), debugger and profiler (performance evaluation).

design with various diagram techniques and to some extent prototyping. From
program module definitions the system generates code frames to be extended and
refined for the target system.

Summary:
The product is targeted at designing and writing Windows applications quickly
and easily. Rather than using C however, Bridge provides its own language
someplace between the DOS batch language and Windows resource scripts. Bridge
is based on an interpreter. Once the window layout is completed there is no
compile or make step required. This makes prototyping fast but for the price of
some performance. Also a Bridge runtime system is needed for exporting
applications. But the product is good for designing applications quickly within a
given shop. The Windows/386 version can perform true multitasking.

Summary:
CARDtools (Computer-Aided Real-Time Designs Tools) is an integrated set of tools designed
to support complex software projects for real-time, embedded microprocessor systems. The
product offers four levels of software solutions. At the primary level, it provides
conventional CASE tools that support industry standard DeMarco and Yourdon, as well as
open system/data base access support. The second level provides real-time extensions such as
state transition diagrams, control flow representation and PDL The third level of tools targets
real-time embedded systems. These tools support real-time design partitioning, concurrent,
multi-tasking modelling, real-time performance verification, and hardware/software interface
specification. CARDtools also provides solutions for Ada/government projects that include
tools for automatic DoD-Std-2167 documentation generation, requirements traceability and
specific Ada design support. All facilities are integrated through a centralized data base, called
CARDbus. CARDbus supports an open architecture through CARDbus Access which allows
import/export from and to other CASE tools.

Summary:
CASE W is targeted at C programmers who are designing Windows applications.
The windows prototyper includes C code generation. generates C code. Includes C
code generations from the Windows prototype. The C code is then extended with
application fragments. Editing the generated C code is sometimes also necessary
to do Windows calls. The prototyper supports only a Windows subset.

Summary:
The Micro Focus COBOL/2 compiler uses the full power of the IBM Personal
System/2 and can be used under OS/2 and PC DOS to create stand-alone or network
applications. The product is provided with an integrated debugging tool,
ANIMATOR, and supports a rich variety of COBOL dialects, allowing applications to
be developed using the latest ANSI 85 structured code. Applications can be
migrated from other environments and can be produced for both OS/2 and MS
DOS.
Micro Focus is the supplier to IBM of their IBM COBOL/2 and the early release
IBM COBOL version 2.0. Micro Focus COBOL/2 is upwards compatible with both
compilers.
IBM's SAA standard for COBOL was created to facilitate the portation of COBOL
applications across the range of IBM hardware. The Micro Focus COBOL/2
compiler is the first COBOL compiler to conform to and support this standard.
Micro Focus COBOL/2 supports many COBOL syntaxes, including Microsoft and
Ryan-McFarland COBOL and provides foreign language interfaces to other
languages such as assembler,C,Fortran and Pascal.

Comments: other pricing packages, TRAINING
Summary:
The product uses fourth generation techniques to create programs written in standard ANSI
COBOL and meeting IBM's COBOL SAA standards. CoFac is a menu driven interactive
system that requires that you answer questions with information provided from your
functional specifications. CoFac does the rest in a two-step generative process. The first step
involves the creation of parameter file from the functional specifications. These parameters are
then used in the second step to produce structured COBOL code (both online and batch) ready
to be compiled in the desired operating environment -- CICS, MVS, DOS/VSE, PC, LAN --
and accessing VSAM, ISAM, DL/I, DB2, SQL/DS file structures.
Since the same parameters can be used to generate programs for the MAINFRAME or
the PC, CoFac exploits the PC for prototyping before generating the mainframe programs.
