    CSci372 Computers in Organisations

2008-07-18 Fri Jul 18 05:07 Class Dates Updated

This quarter we are required to take Veteran's Day off. The missing classes will be made up (CSUSB wide) on Monday the 8th of December.

To repeat: the last Tuesday class will be held on a Monday.

I've changed the dates in [ schedule.html ] to fit this -- but It is easy to get the details wrong and I also will not know the dates for the field trips until September.

      2008-06-02 Mon Jun 2 19:06 Job Skill

According to an advertisement in the Loas Angeles Times (Jun 1st 2008, latimes/jobs) the kind of skills and techniques that we cover in this class are part of one of the fastest growing careers in the USA.

      2008-05-21 Wed May 21 20:05 Preparation for Fall 2008

CS372 has been scheduled to be taught by me next Fall.

My plan is to restructure and improve this web site. However the syllabus and course objectives etc will be similar to last year. I'll leave these up. One thing to note: credit for attending a seminar will depend on giving me a written report within a week of the seminar.

The schedule will have to change because of Veteran's Day is a mandated holiday in California.

Look out for a major reorganization of this page and all the other pages for this course in September 2008.

2007-12-05 Wed Dec 5 12:12 Preliminary Grades Published

I've graded the finals and the projects and included the recent bonusses. See [ grading/ ] for the current results. WARNING: any of these may change if I or any one else can spot an error. NOTE: There are a lot of A's and A-'s. Also note.... only one person could benefit by attending more seminars.

Another note: one person lost points by drawing a diagram when asked to write a use case.

And a comment: Most people who did the cell phone essay proved convincingly that the cell phone is the computer of the future rather than the peripheral of the future. My guess is that it is going to reshape the use of computers in organizations drastically in the near future.

      2007-11-20 Tue Nov 20 09:11 Job News

You might like to compare some of the things we have been doing in this class with the content in the following news cutting from the Association for Computing Machinary.

Nine Non-Techie Skills that Hiring Managers Wish You Had

        Computerworld, November 12

While technical skills remain the bedrock of any IT position, an increasing number of employers are now expecting their new hires to have a broad range of skills in areas ranging from communication to accounting to leadership. In their continual attempt to align IT with business, executives and managers say they are increasingly looking for staffers who have solid business acumen and so-called soft skills. The article provides an overview of nine skills employers are looking for, with additional advice on how to acquire them.

Writing and communication skills remain an important prerequisite for nearly any mid- to high-level IT position. Also important is the skill of being able to understand how to map different business processes and create visual depictions of how business processes flow across functional areas. Thirdly, IT workers must be comfortable with public speaking. For each of these skills, there are clubs, educational programs and courses that can address any shortcomings.

Other important skills include a familiarity with accounting and the ability to work well with a team. A person who is able to gain consensus and sell an idea not only gets the job done, but makes the group stronger. Hiring managers highly value people who can seize the initiative without the need for constant oversight. They place a premium on an inquisitive mind, the ability to get a point across, and a willingness to take risks. The modern IT person needs to be more of an IT entrepreneur, since he or she is constantly looking to improve upon existing ways of doing things or identify other business and operational opportunities

Next up: Study [ d3.html ] and bring your field trip report to class along with a 2 point review question.

Check out the campus web site for details.

If the campus doesn't reschedule finals and give us some class time back I'll be forced to give credit for the missed Quiz and strike Planning out of the final as well. I regret this.

I'll expect project2 and project3 deliverables in at the same time November 8th (at twice value). No projects due this week.

      2007-10-19 Fri Oct 19 15:10 Grades Posted

I've just updated [ grading/ ] with the latest bonus from this morning, the latest projects: if you were on listed on a project you got the 5 points for the project, the class (2 points), and the Quiz.

For future reference here are the steps in Cost-Benefit Analysis

      1. Make a list of all costs and benefits from the start of the project to it's end of life.
      2. Classify each as tangible or intangible.
      3. Classify each as one-off or recurring.
      4. Use a spread sheet to tabulate all costs/Benefits and WHEN they occur.
      5. For each time period add up benefits and subtract costs to get the "cash flow" for that time.
      6. Convert each cashflow into "Present Value" or PV.
      7. Calculate the Net Present Value NPV at each period.
      8. Note the break even point when the project moves (we hope) from NPV negative to NPV positive.
      9. Calculate the final Reurn On Investment (ROI) = Final NPV/Money invested.

      2007-10-16 Tue Oct 16 14:10 Dirty Secrets

Following on from our last field (report due today), and the seminar on Friday, I've just got this [ ?p=546 ] from Brian Carlson. Key point: Programmers and Analysts (Computer Scientists) usually have a better life than described here in "IT".

And on the next Friday there is another expos'e of life after college... and Games Programming.

      [ grading/ ]

2007-10-11 Thu Oct 11 14:10 Grades available Fridays not Thursdays

I think it makes more sense to post the grading on Fridays -- complete with quizzes and projects etc. Check out [ plan.html ] for my plans. Use the [Contact] button to complain...

2007-10-10 Wed Oct 10 10:10 Logical and Physical Models

Grading the scenarios ( [ grading/ ] ) showed me that I have forgotten to stress the difference between Physical and Logical models. A Physical model mentions the technology. A Logical model avoids this. A scenario has a longer useful life if it is "Logical" rather than "Physical" because we always change the technology! In future, please avoid even subtle references to technology like
The user clicks the Cancel Button to go to the Exit Page.
This assumes the use of a WIMP interface (Windows+I??+Menus+Pointer) through the Web. (No points were lost this time). Better:
The user cancels and the system acknowledges.

I've added notes of Physical and Logical Modelling through out the notes we have covered so far. Selecting [ lookup.php?search=Physical ] will search these notes while Physical should list the references in the literature for you.

      2007-10-08 Mon Oct 8 14:10 New Example

I'm starting to reverse engineer some documents based on a project completed by one of my graduate students: [ ../seminar/20040223ChiehChouChou.txt ] [ ../seminar/20040223ChouFlyer.pdf ]

The first document is a Domain Model or a first Entity Relationship Model [ ERD0.gif ] and the second is the kind of rough intial data dictionary I might prepare [ dd01.html ] early in the project.

Later I will add more to this leading up to the Power Point presentation that the student made.

2007-10-05 Fri Oct 5 14:10 Grades now include the DFD Quiz

      2007-09-25 Tue Sep 25 09:09 News of a project+job+network fix

The president of CSUSB has launched a new project [ CSUSB20070924.txt ] to make sure that students don`t get confused by the CSUSB Web Site. We may do an exercise on this document...

Ramiro Diaz-Granados (who runs the CSUSB help desk) has a job coming up for a reliable student working with PCs. 4hours><5dayes/week at $9..$11 per hour. Contact Ramiro X77362.

And Brian reports that csci.csusb.edu is talking to the CSUSB WiFi again. I did some quick diagnostic testing yesterday morning and Emailed the System Admin...

2007-09-24 Mon Sep 24 07:09 Problems with site

Brian Carlson reports that I've forgotten to change 2006 to 2007 on some pages (including this own). Sorry. I'll fix them.

Brian also tells me that the WiFi network has again lost its connection with csci.csusb.edu (and probably math.csusb.edu). This happened and went away during the summer. I've Emailed the CSci/Math SYstem Admin and it may start to work again.

      Thanx Brian!

I've done the final pre-class revision of [ a2.html ] shortly ready for tomorrow. If you can find out anything that needs fixing or improving I'll do it after Tuedays class. Meanwhile I'll then be starting work on a3.html.

Don't be scared.... this has been done by every class so far [ projects.html ]

The readings are now categorised and labelleb by a letter and a number: [ Readings.html ] , now lots of rewriting and reordering...

      2007-07-17 Tue Jul 17 10:07 Reorganized readings

I've attached a two digit code to each set of readings [ Readings.html ] as a half-way-house to placing them in the schedule.

2007-06-25 Mon Jun 25 19:06 Fixed the dates in the schedule

But the events happing on each day are not clear yet... Field trips are yet to be scheduled. Also organizing the preparation and content of each class... But you can put the dates from [ schedule.txt ] in you diary/PDA/planner.
