Victorian times by the Rev'd Charles Dodgson in his paper on the
design for a new mathematics building in Oxford University, England.

. Semantics

The $top indicates if the writer is normal, winking, or wearing glasses, respectively.

The $bottom indicates the emotional state of the writer - the "(" indicating
sadness and displeasure, where as the ":-)" indicates joke.
