CSCI 482 Senior Interdisciplinary Project

Steps for Completing CSCI 482

  1. Start to plan your project well before the quarter begins. Find a faculty member who is willing to be adviser for your project.
  2. Find a client for whom you will complete a useful piece of work. You can develop a software system, or solve another computing problem for your client. If your project is to build a software system, you need to write a software requirements specification (example SRS), otherwise you need to write a project proposal (example proposals).
  3. At the beginning of the quarter in which you wish to complete your project, have your SRS or project proposal approved by your adviser, and submit it to the Department of Computer Science along with a CSCI 482 Project Application Form. The Department will register you for the course after receiving and approving your application; you do not register for this course online.
  4. Perform the project work activity.
  5. Have your client and adviser complete their respective sections of the CSCI 482 Project Evaluation Form, and submit the form to the Department of Computer Science.
  6. Develop an electronic version of a poster that summarizes your project and give to your adviser.(example posters)
  7. Coordinate with your adviser to schedule a time to present your results (15 to 30 minute presentation) and prepare a presentation announcement that includes an abstract. (example presentation announcements)
  8. Send the presentation announcement to your adviser and the chair of the Department Seminar Committee (presently Dr. Botting).
  9. Send the poster to the Department web master (presently Dr. Turner).
  10. Give your presentation at the arranged date and time.
  11. Submit to your adviser all electronic artifacts that comprise your project, including your proposal (or SRS), poster, slides, code, etc.

Project Proposal

If you are writing a software requires specification instead of a project proposal, then this section does not apply to you.

If you are submitting a project proposal, you should include the following sections in the proposal.

  • Introduction -- Briefly describe your client, what has been done in the past, and the contribution you plan to make.
  • Needs Assessment -- Provide a detailed description of the needs that you will fulfill for the client.
  • Methodology -- Describe how you will carry out the work. Describe the tools you will use and the research that you will do.
  • Project Deliverables -- List the deliverables that make up a solution for the client needs. Provide estimated completion dates for each deliverable. Include a 30-minute presentation as the final project deliverable.

Include the following information in the title page of your proposal.

  • Project title
  • The course number and title: CSCI 482 Senior Interdisciplinary Project
  • The quarter and year in which you will enroll in CSCI 482
  • Your name
  • Your adviser's name
  • The date you wrote (or last revised) the proposal

Creating a Project Summary Poster

  • You should create a project poster (in electronic format only) with dimensions 2 feet high by 3 feet wide.
  • The poster should present an attractive summary of your work.
  • Your poster should be printable; see the University Duplicating Center File Requirements for help in determining what you need to create and how to create it. However, you do not need to print your poster.
  • Send an image of your poster to your faculty adviser for approval.

Note: it is also possible to produce posters using Latex, which is free. See Using LaTeX to produce conference posters.
